Diabetes mellitus (DM), is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia. It is a chronic progressive condition and is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness, in addition to being a major cause of heart disease and stroke. Malaysia has the highest rate of DM in Asia, affecting over 3.5 million (16.9%) people in the country alone and the number is expected to rise.
